Antietam National Battlefield, MD : Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, MD is probably one of the best preserved Civil War Battlefields in the country. A 9-mile tour road leads guests through the battlefield. For us the tour took just over 2 hours. General Robert E. Lee'S first invasion of the North culminated with the Battle of Antietam. The battle took place on Wednesday, September 17, 1862, just 18 days after the Confederate victory at Second Manassas, 40 miles to the southeast in Virginia. Not only was this the first major Civil War engagement on Northern soil, it was also the bloodiest single day battle in American history. Antietam resulted in nine times as many Americans killed or wounded (23,000 soldiers) as took place on D-day in of World War II. According to National Archives data American casualties at Omaha and Utah beaches on D-Day totaled 2,510. The Union victory at Antietam set the stage for Lincoln's Emancipation Proclaimation.
