Wanderin Boy (2001-2008): Woodward 2008 : Wanderin Boy, at age 7, had made 24 career starts, winning nine, with six seconds and three thirds for earnings of $1.2 million. His remarkable life and his racing record are reviewed in this fine article by Steve Haskin in Bloodhorse: http://racing.bloodhorse.com/article/48251.htm. I saw him run only at the 2008 Woodward at Saratoga. This sequence of pictures shows him (the 8, under Julien Leparoux) moving quickly from his outside post to challenge the pace. He maintained second position (behind Past the Point) until overtaken by Curlin at the top of the stretch. The chartcaller noted that he "fought back in upper stretch". He finished third to Curlin and Past the Point. Wanderin Boy was humanely euthanized at Aqueduct on November 29, 2008, after fracturing the sesamoids in his left front leg just after turning for home in the Cigar Mile. It was to have been his last career start. RIP, Wanderin Boy.

Churchill Downs 06/14/08 Stephen Foster Handicap Day : Photos from June 14th, 2008 at Churchill downs which was also the day that the Stephen Foster Handicap was run. Curlin, the leading money winner in Racing history raced in and won the Stephen foster Handicap on this day. Tin Cup Chalice (2005-2009) wins the Albany and the Big Apple Triple. Saratoga, 8/20/08 : 8/26/08 -- Tin Cup Chalice, a three-year-old gelding, is pictured here winning the Albany, a 9F $150,000 stakes for NY-breds, and the third leg of the Big Apple Triple, on 8/20/06 at Saratoga. He was as a result undefeated in seven starts. He had previously won the first two legs of the Big Apple Triple, but no horse has won the Triple itself since it was established in 1999. The Albany was considered a significant step up in class for Tin Cup Chalice, who is stabled at Finger Lakes and has run most of his races there. Among the field were Ichabad Crane (third in the Preakness) and Big Truck (winner of the G3 Tampa Derby). Tin Cup Chalice, under his regular rider Pedro Rodriguez (no previous starts this year at Saratoga, based at Finger Lakes) led from the outset, and was not challenged for the soft pace (25.66, 50.88, and 1:15.33). But in the stretch, he fended off bids from both Ichabad Crane and Big Truck. He turned back his final challenger, Thatsrightofficer, in the final sixteenth (pictured here), stubbornly hanging on. Tin Cup Chalice was bred and is trained and partially owned by Mike Lecesse, who is headquartered at Finger Lakes. Another owner, Scott van Laer, is reportedly a forest ranger. Winning the Triple added an additional $250,000 (plus his share of the Albany purse) to Tin Cup Chalice's lifetime earnings, which are now in excess of $500,000. Many of Tin Cup Chalice's fans were in attendance, and their jubilation was evident as he was cheered into the winners' circle. The enthusiasm was shared by turfwriters: the often disgusted veteran Paul Moran said: "Finally, there is a story worth embracing, a new favorite horse: Tin Cup Chalice . . . Tin Cup Chalice is the dream-come-true of everyone who plays the game small, chases lightning with a bottle and tempts fate in the face of impossible odds. On October 4, 2008, Tin Cup Chalice won the $500,000 Indiana Derby (G2) by a full length. He held off the favorite, Pyro, and Acai. Evening Attire : It was announced on September 28, 2008, that Evening Attire is being retired, at age ten, due to an injured suspensory. See Steve Haskin's piece in Bloodhorse: http://racing.bloodhorse.com/article/47296.htm According to the linked article, Evening Attire, (by Black Tie Affair, out of Concolour, by Our Native) retired with 15 victories, 16 seconds, and nine thirds from 69 starts, for earnings of $2,977,130. Evening Attire had a huge fan club, and his own website, www.eveningattire.net, which is the first stop for anyone wanting to review his remarkable (and unusually long) career. His co-owner Tom Kelly (also father of his trainer, Pat Kelly) told Bloodhorse: " . . at the final end when it counted, from the quarter pole to the wire, he always put in his run. I’ve never seen him back once. He might have finished second, third, fourth, or fifth, but he was always running at the end, where the best part of a racehorse manifests itself. We’re all going to miss him.” I never saw Evening Attire race, but caught him exercising a couple of times this summer at Saratoga. These pictures are from one of those occasions. His fans (I'm a big one) will miss him . . but his connections loved him and are doing the right thing by him. Retirement plans are uncertain . . . I'll post them here when announced.
