Damselflies : The first two photos are of a tiny species of damselfly, just over an inch long, which I will try to get identified. The rest of the photos are of the Ebony Jewelwing (Calopteryx maculata), a broad-winged damselfly, which can be found in southern Canada and all but 15 states in the US. The male has a metallic blue-green body with black wings. The female has a brown body and smoky brown wings with bright white spots (stigmas) on the top edge near the tip. During mating the male will land on the female and grab her behind the head with the tip of his abdomen. This gallery of photos includes the mating ritual of the Ebony Jewelwing, and a photo of a six-spotted beetle which is one of the insects in the list of their prey.

Judys Flowers on 061411 : Think of this as Nature's urban renewal. We have two things in the backyard that are self renewing in a noticeable way One is the domestic blackberry vines that were in the backyard over 15 years ago when we bought this house and were a factor in its selection. The other are the sunflower plants Judy first planted a few years ago. Even though there were cut down and pulled up at the end of last summer, here they are again given pleasure and recreation to me and a great habitat for swarms of living creatures.

Shot with Sony Alpha A900 with Tamron 28-200/3.5-5.6 Macro, in sunlight with clouds in sky. Move to such a position that it appeared there was no direct reflection - outside the family of angles producing direct reflections from most surfaces. Existing light with no fill flash, and if it is used later the exception will be noted on the individual flower. Started out with the Sony A900 micro-adjust lens calibration set to +5.

In all cases the photos were shot in ARW raw and converted in Adobe Camera Raw 6.0 which included some parametric editing - color cast, curves, 'Recovery.' Post processed using Adobe CS5 with Topaz Plug-ins(DeNoise, Adjust, In-Focus, Detail)
