Castle The first O'Donnel king began his reign in 1200. The castle was built by Adoh Ruadh O'Donnell 1) in 1505. The final Chieftian Aodh Ruadh O'Donnell 2 (Red Hugh O'Donnell) burned it to the ground in 1607 rather than let it fall into English hands. Rebuilt in Jacobean style in 16th century by Sir Basil Brooke when the English had full control in this part of Ireland. After Cromwell's rout of Ireland it was left to fall into decay. It was restored during the 1990s.
