CalifoniaMan Morgan Hill June 2006 : Yeah baby, 5:47 half Ironman. I like to call it redemption from Auburn. It was not a perfect day however, I got a major stomach cramp. I think I was eating too many calories on the bike at one time. I ate a 1400 calorie breakfast, so in all reality I didn't need to eat too many calories at all. After my cramp finally started to disappear, I didn't eat anything else. So I ended the race eating probably only about 200-300 calories. It was a glorious finish especially when my sweet little Julia jumped up and ran the last 50 yds with me to the finish line!

Auburn International Triathlon May 2006 : Ahh another Triathlon under my belt, in the most perfect setting. Folsom Lake 68 degrees water temp, beautiful partly sunny cloudy day, couldn't have been better, well except for one thing, mi estomago, didn't agree with the situation. The week before the race I had some weird stomach virus just linger and linger, thanks to Monet Carr. After many months of training I thought I could still do okay, bzzzt I was wrong.

Big D was haunting me the whole time, before, during and after if you know what I mean. I do have to say, despite Big D hanging around, I had a pretty good swim. I swam the 1.2 miles in 34 min. That was a relief as I didn't have a great swim at my last race. It was good to get that little guy out of my head telling me I can't swim. I also rode the entire 56 mile bike ride but I had a lot of stomach pain the entire way.

Luckily for you and the other citizens around, I didn't have to go the entire bike ride. Welp, that luck ran out the minute I took one small step trying to run. Have you ever tried to run when your belly is just wrenching itself and you are trying to squeeze your bum together, so as not too leak? Doing the Big D shuffle is not very easy, especially considering the distances I just finished on the bike and what I had left to run. I was able to consume about 1200 calories on the bike but I don't think much got digested. My stomach was absolutely bloated and gurgling. You will see that I managed a couple jogging steps past the family and other spectators but once around the corner, I was looking for the nearest hideaway.

WARNING: next time you are hiking the beautiful hills in Auburn, please stay on the trails.

Well, about a couple miles into the 13.2 mile "walk" Chris MacAskill, SmugMug Cofounder who had to be pulled out of the water because of an asthma attack, found me out on the trails stumbling along. After seeing and hearing my disgraceful self and seeing that I was dehydrated beyond compare, he begged me to turn around and head for the med tent. It didn't take too much to get me to agree, but I still felt it was a devastating blow to receive a DNF (Did Not Finish).

No worries Mom, my family and friends took good care of me and I feel better now. I am starting to prepare to race again soon, gotta redeem myself :)

PS--another great lesson learned, always put sunscreen on in T1 transition to the bike. (Check out my back after the race for proof)

Windman Los Banos Oct 2005 : Aaah this was an incredible day after long hours of work. The Windman Triathlon held in Los Banos CA was my first ever. I decided to run the Olympic length triathlon. The size is 1 mile swim, 25 mile bike, 6 mile run.

I had a horrible swim. I finished it in 33 minutes. Afterwards I was so cold, I couldn't get off my wetsuit and I couldn't dry off my feet. I took another 7 minutes at the transition, which is absolutely pathetic. (Most people do it in 2-4 minutes).

The bike was great, I felt good all the way. The run was great, except I had to run on steep mountain trails up and down. Lets put it this way, they were steep enough to where you wanted to walk down so you would slip and fall.

All in all I had an incredible day finishing the whole race in 2 hours and 42 minutes! Next Tri will be May 2006 Wildflower Half Ironman (Twice as far as an Olympic!)
