Ein Gedi: October 13, 2009 : The day I didn't do so well on a hike!
After Sukkos, with Steve and Shalom, still on bain hazmanim, and Zahava, Moshe, and I working, Moshe and I took a day off, Steve and I rented a car, and the two boys came with us to Ein Gedi. Steve had never visited the Park, and I went in 1969! Instead of doing the easier hike to David's waterfall, we decided (my brilliant idea) to do a little more difficult walk thru' the Wadi Arugot. Well, I was not able to complete the walk, and Steve and I returned. Moshe and Shalom went on to the little falls at the end of the hike. I was really overcome by the heat and the upward climb. Not only that but, being a "chacham ba'layla", I had frozen all our water bottles, and despite the immense heat, they were not melting fast enough! We had to keep taking sips. I did managed to take some pictures - of course! And I insist on going back another time - in cooler weather - to try the easier trail to the David waterfalls.
But I do admit that I need to limit my expectations of what I can manage these days...
By the way, we had the opportunity to say the "Oseh ma'asai braishit" bracha, when we got our first glimpse of the Dead Sea - in the week of Parshat Braishit.

Hula Valley Tayelet March 15, 2009 : Fourth day of our mini-vacation (the third day was Shabbat): I think this was the fourth time we went there, but we love it every time. It always looks different, yet reassuringly the same.

Nachal Zavitan HaElyon: March 13 2009 : Day two of our mini-vacation: The Upper Zavitan Canyon - trail #5 of 11 trails in the Yehudiya Nature Reserve. So, Friday we drove to the Yehudiya parking lot north-east of the Kineret, with intentions of doing the Lower Zavitan trail. The guys at the kupa there took one look at us, and in a nice way, said - Eh.. that trail is for experienced hikers only! They recommended this trail, which is "intermediate" and being Erev Shabbat - only three hours. It actually took us 3.5 hours. It was beautiful, but quite challenging for us old folks. But well worth it. It was a circular route - we started on the blue trail, switched to the black, turned left at the red, and came back on the blue.
