Nara : Nara, etwas mehr als eine halbe Stunde mit der Bahn von Kyoto entfernt, hat fast so viel Geschichte aufzuweisen wie Kyoto. Von 710 bis 785 war Nara die Hauptstadt Japans. Heute ist die Hauptattraktion der Todai Ji, ein riesiger Tempelkomplex im Nara Koen, einem weitläufigen Park, in dem über tausend zahme Hirsche leben. Die Daibutsa Den, die Halle des Großen Buddha ist das größte Holzgebäude der Welt - was allerdings auch von anderen Gebäuden behauptet wird. Die Halle ist allerdings schon sehr groß, dabei ist die heutige Halle, die 1709 als Ersatz für die abgebrannte Originalhalle gebaut wurde, nur zwei Drittel der Größe des Originals. die Statue des Grossen Buddha ist 16 m hoch und besteht aus 437 Tonnen Bronze und 130 kg Gold. Als wir dort waren, hatten offenbar die Schulklassen von Nara ihren Ausflugstag, was uns ein paar schöne Aufnahmen gebracht hat. Nara, a bit more than half an hour by train from Kyoto, has almost as much history as Kyoto. From 710 ti 785 Nara was the capital of Japan. Today the main attraction is Todai Ji, a huge temple complex inside of Nara Koen, a sprawling park which houses more than one thousand tame deer. Daibutsu Den, the Hall of the Great Buddha is the largest wooden structure in the world, but this is being said about other buildings, too. The hall is indeed very large, and the current hall, which has been built in 1709 as a replacement for the original structure which was detroyed by fire, is only two thirds of the size of the original. The Great Buddha statue is 16 m high, it consists of 437 tons of bronze ans 130 kg of gold. When we were there, the school kids of Nara seemed to have had a field trip day, which gave us the opportunity for a few nice shots.

Hiei-zan : Der 848m hohe Hiei-zan ist ein Berg im Nordosten von Kyoto und eine der wichtigstan historischen Stätten in Japan. Hier wurde 788 der Enryaku-ji gegründet, einer der wichtigsten japanischen buddistischen Tempel. Am Höhepunkt seiner Macht bestand der Tempel aus etwa 3000 Gebäuden und verfügte über eine Armee von mehren tausend Kriegermönchen. 1571 sah der damalige Herrscher der Region den Tempel als Bedrohung für seine politischen Zeihle und vernichtete die meisten der Gebäude, zusammen mit den Mönchen. Heute gibt es auf dem Hiei-zan noch drei Pagoden und etwa 120 Tempelgebäude, mehr als genug um einen ganzen Tag bei schönstem Herbstwetter durch den Wald auf dem Bergipfel zu stromern und an jeder Ecke etwas Neues zu entdecken. The 848m high Hiei-zan is a mountain in the north east of Kyoto and one of the key historical sites in Japan. Here the Enryaku-ji was founded in 788, one of the most important Japanese buddhist temples. At the height of its power the temple had around 3000 buildings and an army of several thousand warrior monks. In 1571 the local noble saw the temple as a threat to his political aims and destroyed most of the buildings, together with the monks. Today three pagodas and about 120 temple buildings remain on Hiei-zan, enough to stroll around the forest on the mountain top in beautiful autumn weather and find something new around every corner.
