> Edo MuseumNear the Tokyo Sumo arena is the Edo Museum. In the multilevel museum are hands on displays and miniature displays of old Edo. There were volunteer tour guides for foreign tourists. A senior volunteer guided me through the museum and interestingly asked me "why" questions. Although the Edo Museum was about olden times, the architecture appears quite modern. > Nikko Temple Wedding Traditional weddings at Nikko temples is seen often. Nikko temple complex has 5-7 ascending levels of temples. Each temple complex is large. This is a popular tourist location which is located north of Tokyo in a small town of Nikko. Photographer: Leroy Nagasako
> Climbing Aki Grapevines Wild grapevines in the fall (Aki)season can be seen from the country roads leading to Hakoda Ropeway (Mt. Hakoda). It is a bright, striking sight at the start of the fall season. Photographer: Leroy Nagasako
> Entrance To Hirosaki Castle The red bridge was most impressive part of Hirosaki Castle and its large park. There are many Sakura trees lining this castle park such as along the moat. Some Sakura trees are very old. The trees alongside the entrance are Sakura. My friend Ed and I use the poetic phrases such as "Among flowers, the Sakura, " when we have to give testimonials to celebrate people's achievement. Of course, Hirosaki Castle was guarded when we climbed ladders to the top floor of the castle. From this, one thinks of "Among men, the samurai!" Photographer: Leroy Nagasako
> Solitude at Hirosaki Castle ParkThere are open areas in the castle complex as well as nice trees inside and outside of Hirosaki Castle. This is an early morning scene of a young lady resting. Beyond the grove of trees were seniors doing their daily morning group exercises in an open grassy area. Traveling abroad in a foreign land, one tries to see and learn many things. > Hanging GourdsThe large hanging gourds was part of an Aomori Ringo (apple) farm. We stopped to buy some ringo where you put money in a container in a roadside stand for your bag of fruits or vegetables. When the gourds are dried, the farmer sells gourds as decorative pieces. The main focus was on acres and acres of ringo orchards. The unique geometrical shapes and varying sizes catches ones eyes. Photographer: Leroy Nagasako
> Rice Fields Before HarvestThe yellow golden rice fields are ready for harvest. Although this photo does not show soba (buckwheat) fields, soba fields have white flowers blooming. One appreciates the food and eating of rice and soba after one visits Japan. Sake is also as a product of rice fields (kome no hatake). Among rice wines, Yama Uta Restaurant sake in Hirosaki City was enjoyed. I would like to see brown mochi rice fields in my future travels. Brown mochi rice can be purchased at Marukai Store. > Towada Ko Island Towada Ko(lake)is slightly over 1,000 miles north of Tokyo. This is a very big lake on top of a mountain like Oregon's Crater Lake. This picture was most impressive during the late morning because the hills cast shadows in early morning hours. The photo was taken along a path toards Bronze Maidens. My host asked a group of seniors if they wanted maidens in their group shot! Most of Towada Ko tourists are older since it is far from Tokyo. Towada Ko Island is as impressive as the Bronze Maiden statues. Photographer: Leroy Nagasako
> Oirase Gorge FallThere are many falls and walking paths in Oirase Gorge. Located near Towada Ko, one travels along a windy, narrow country road with many trees in the gorge. H. Kimura, in his younger days, has painted watercolor paintings of Oirase, Ichinoseki, Genbei, and Aomori mountain scenes. Some of Kimura's water color prints was given to me in Hirosaki Si(City). The fall shows an afternoon rush of waters after the rains that day in October. Photographer: Leroy Nagasako
