Tuskegee v Kentucky State : Tuskegee 6 (6-9 / 0-3) vs Kentucky State 10 (6-8 / 3-0)


FRANKFORT, Ky. – With Sundays 10-6 victory over Tuskegee University, the Kentucky State Thorobreds completed their SIAC opening series sweep of the Golden Tigers.
 
Kentucky State (6-8, 3-0 SIAC) continued to swing the bats well as it remained perfect in conference play with another victory over Tuskegee University (6-9, 0-3 SIAC).
 
Sophomore Cornell Brown (1-2) was credited with the victory for Kentucky State after pitching 5.1 innings. Brown started strong, striking out two batters in the first four innings, but struggled late giving up four runs in his final three innings of work. Brown gave up just three hits, finishing with two strikeouts and seven walks in his time on the mound.
 
Tuskegee starting pitcher John Bryant (1-2) was given the loss for the Golden Tigers. Bryant gave up 10 hits and 10 runs, eight earned, in 5.2 innings of work.
 
Kentucky State got on the scoreboard first when the Thorobred's bats came to life in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Second baseman Marcus Jackson got things started when he hit a single up the middle that plated Reginald Grimes II.
 
The Thorobreds took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Kyle Clark scored on an error by Tuskegee shortstop Jon Allen.
 
The Golden Tigers scored their first run in the top of the fourth inning when Samuel Rodney hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought home Cameron Duncan.
 
KSU added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when first baseman Jacob Brackett smashed a single through the left side that plated Clark from second base, pushing the KSU lead to 7-1.
 
Tuskegee cut the Thorobred's lead to 7-3 when third baseman William McCrary hustled out a 2 RBI triple in the top of the fifth inning.
 
The Golden Tigers trimmed the KSU lead to 7-6 in the top of the sixth inning.
 
Kentucky State responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning thanks in large part to a Brackett triple that brought home Howard and Davie.
 
KSU held on for the 10-6 victory after neither team scored in the final three innings. 
 
Kentucky State hits the road for a doubleheader against the University of Indianapolis this Wednesday, March 13.

Raiders win MSC title tilt in overtime

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Top-seeded Lindsey Wilson College outscored No. 2 University of Pikeville 13-9 in overtime to claim the championship of the Mid-South Conference tournament 77-73 on Sunday afternoon in the Frankfort Convention Center. 

Pikeville (26-6), saw a seven-game win streak come to an end with the loss, but is assured of a trip to Kansas City to play in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Tournament beginning March 13. 

Lindsey Wilson, 29-4, got a three-point play by junior Milton Watts four seconds into overtime, and when senior guard Kalen Kimberland sank two free throws with 4:18 to play, Lindsey was on top 69-64. 

Kimberland led the Blue Raiders with 25 points, hitting 12-of-16 from the line. 

The Bears got as close as two with 2:07 left when senior Jamar Briscoe sank a three-point shot to make it 71-69, but could get no closer in the extra frame. 

The game was tied 11 times and saw the lead change hands five different times, but in overtime, Lindsey led the entire way. 

The teams, ranked third (Lindsey Wilson) and 10th (UPike) in the country, were separated by no more than eight points in the entire game. 

Briscoe led all scorers with 32 points in the game. The senior from Baltimore scored a tournament high 83 points in three outings. 

Junior guard Elisha Justice fired in 11 while handing out seven assists, pulling four rebounds and picking up two steals. In 32 minutes of play, he turned it over only a single time.

Kimberland was joined in double figures by Watts, who had 12 and 10 rebounds, while senior DeAntra Scott tossed in 11 and junior Chris Bridges 10.
