SPRINGS BRUSH FIRE VENTURA : CAMARILLO, Calif. — The so-called Springs Fire in Ventura County has burned at least 10,000 acres and is just 10 percent contained, fire officials said Friday. It has damaged 15 homes, five commercial properties and 15 outbuildings, according to Cal Fire. Some 4,000 residences were threatened, the agency said, and hundreds of people have had to evacuate ahead of the fast-moving flames. The blaze was reported around 6:45 a.m. Thursday just west of the southbound 101 near Camarillo Springs Road.
It quickly burned across the Camarillo landscape toward Newbury Park, scorching 100 acres in less than an hour. Several agricultural buildings also burned in the middle of a strawberry field.
By the afternoon, the fire had made its way to Point Mugu State Park on a trek toward the ocean. It reached the coast Thursday evening. Cal State Channel Islands and multiple neighborhoods were evacuated as Santa Ana winds blew the flames southwest. On Friday, the fire continued to burn in the Sycamore Canyon area of Point Mugu State Park. It had advanced to the coast and jumped Deer Creek Road, officials said. Evacuations remained in effect for Potrero Road to Lewis Road, Yerba Buena Road and Deer Creek Road, Sycamore Canyon, Broom Ranch and La Jolla Canyon.
The evacuations for the Cal State Channel Islands and Dos Vientos area have been lifted and reopened to residents only. The Cal State Channel Islands campus, including the student housing villages, will remain closed and classes and activities are cancelled through Friday.
Pacific Coast Highway remained closed from Las Posas Rd and the Ventura/L.A. County line. Photos by Juan Guerra
