McGulpin's Point Lighthouse, MI (8-9-10) : McGulpin's Point light was built in 1869 answering a 15-year old request for an aid to navigation at the straits. The lighthouse, unfortunately, was misplaced. The point of land three miles east housing the old Fort Michilimackinac was obviously farther north and a better location for a lighthouse. In 1896 the Lighthouse Board rectified the problem by building the (now) more popular Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. Curiously both lighthouses operated cooperatively for another 10 years until McGulpin's Point light was finally extinguished in 1906. For the next century the light was privately owned, passing hands a number of times, and all but forgotten. In 2005 the property went up for sale and, for a time, there was a real danger of the land being sold to private developers. Luckily, in 2008, Emmet County stepped up and purchased the property and immediately set about restoring the old light. The lantern room, long removed, was replaced and, in 2009, the light was opened to the public. The lighthouse is a work in progress and lacks the glitz of nearby Old Mackinac Point. The work that has been done here is still remarkable, and its all by donation. If you're looking for a cheaper, quieter experience than visiting Old Mackinac Point I would highly recommend visiting the straits <i>original</i> lighthouse here, at McGulpin's Point...

Barnegat Lighthouse : These are photographs of the Barnegat Lighthouse in Barnegat Light NJ. The lighthouse just recently had it's light replaced and is actually operational. We live in Barnegat NJ which is across the bay from the light but consider it a mascot with the affectionate name of Ol' Barney.
