Dewdrops settled on dense cobwebs wrapped around this small daisy(?) in DuPont State Forrest in North Carolina. I couldn't pass up the many refractions revealing the layers below.

Saw this bug on the sidewalk when I was getting out of my car. I had my 18-105 lens on and I did not take the time to swap to my macro lens. I quickly, (as quick as my old body could) laid down on the sidewalk and took the shot. He was about 1.5 inches long and his antennae were about 2.5 inches across. He was huge.

True flies are insects of the order Diptera (from the Greek di = two, and ptera = wings). They possess a pair of wings on the mesothorax and a pair of halteres, derived from the hind wings, on the metathorax.
Diptera is a large order, containing an estimated 240,000 species of mosquitoes, gnats, midges and others, although under half of these (about 120,000 species) have been described. It is one of the major insect orders both in terms of ecological and human (medical and economic) importance (source: Wikipedia).

Here's Looking At You
I shot this guy on the banks of the Savannah River just below the Lake Hartwell Dam on the South Carolina side. I was ducking under the tree canopy to get out of the rain and, looking around this pokeweed bush, found this fellow watching my every move. I got a couple of dozen shots of him before he got bored and moved to the other side of the berries.

This is a different species of green metallic bee from the previous photo. Still looking for a name. This is an enormous photo in original size ~50MB in TIFF and ~8MB in JPEG as displayed here. Not worth attempting to view the "original" unless you have a very fast internet connection (250KBS+). Instead use the smugloupe in the "Critique" style viewing to view details.
