Captain Joseph House Foundation : HONOR. RESPECT. REMEMBER.

Out on patrol, Joe always rode in the first Humvee, because of his core belief in 'leading from the front.' As a rule, he never asked his men to do anything that he himself wouldn't do. To both those who served with him and knew him outside the military, Joe brought tremendous devotion to protecting and caring for those around him. Joseph served two tours in Iraq, first with the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), 82nd Airborne Division, and later as the G-2 advisor, 10th Iraqi Army Division. After receiving his Green Beret, Joe was assigned to Co. C, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) where he served as Detachment Commander of Special Forces Operational Detachment - Alpha 3333. On May 29, 2011, Joseph was killed in action in the Wardak Province, Afghanistan.

The Captain Joseph Foundation is dedicated to carrying Joe's spirit by providing comfort and care to the families of the Fallen, as they honor, respect, and remember their loved one.

The Captain Joseph House Foundation was founded to care for the families of the Fallen, to help them honor, respect and remember their loved one as they resume their lives. Founded as a living memorial to Captain Joseph William Schultz, the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that provides respite and educational support to the families of the Fallen by extending the continuum of care available through other military, religious, private and non-profit organizations.

For families of the Fallen, celebrating annual holiday traditions, other family traditions, birthdays, the anniversary of their loved one's death can be extremely difficult and at the same time one of the most healing steps a family takes together. The grieving doesn't end with that one-year anniversary of the family's loss and sometimes moving forward from that date may be extremely challenging. Captain Joseph House was founded to provide an opportunity for families as they move into the next chapter of their lives. A family vacation can be one of those challenging times when families begin planning for their trip without their loved one present as he or she has been in the past. To assist in this family experience, Captain Joseph House offers a retreat/respite opportunity for five nights and six days in an incredibly beautiful part of America, the Pacific Northwest. Well trained staff will provide a supportive environment in which families will continue to heal, rebuild, make new memories and traditions as they move forward with their lives.

Serving the immediate families of the Fallen from all military branches, the Foundation will arrange transportation to and from Captain Joseph House, located in Port Angeles, WA.

Captain Joseph House is a 1910 craftsman home, maintained with the charm and comfort of an old-world English estate, and being renovated to meet the needs of three families at a time, throughout the year. The house will offer a relaxed setting in which to enjoy the comforts of a home away from home, and a chance to reflect in a tranquil and peaceful environment. The Port Angeles community offers a myriad of activities for all ages and interests, from strolling the beach, to local restaurants, to the breathtaking Olympic National Park. With up to three families sharing the same respite week, the House will foster an environment where new friendships can take root and draw strength from the common experience of loss. This respite week will provide an opportunity for a family to begin building new memories and new traditions as they regroup and learn to live, laugh and love within this recreated family unit.

Joseph's mother, Betsy Reed Schultz, has always found inspiration in her son's example - his courage, his leadership, his deep belief in serving others. She founded the Captain Joseph House as a living memorial to her son and to carry on his mission of serving others. Betsy brings an incredible wealth of experience to that mission, most significantly a 24-year career in the field of Developmental Services. She provided support and assistance to clients of all ages, from birth to end of life. Much of her time included working with families as they worked through the loss of a loved one. As a recent business owner in the hospitality industry, Betsy earned five consecutive years of First Place awards for outstanding service and commitment to excellence for her guests. She pairs that background with a deep understanding of the ongoing struggles faced by the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. She is past president of the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce, and was named a 'Woman of Distinction' by the Soroptomist International of the Americas.
