"Red" Hughes.My Grandfather.Born in Moorehead,Ms.on the Eleventh day of May 1916,and lived in Moss Point,Ms.,and Mobile,Al until his death on the Twenty-Third day of June 2003.He was Retired from Mississippi Export Railroad.This is a picture of him,his Medals(accomplishments),Moss Point Mississippi VFW Hat,Super Sixth Armored Division Patch,United States Flag that Draped his Coffin and Three of the Twenty One Shells fired at his funeral.He participated in the invasion of Normandy,and fought in military operations in France,Belgium,Luxembourg,and Germany as Seargant in A Company,9th Armored Infantry Battalion.As a result of his duty overseas,He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster,Combat Infantryman's Badge,Expert Marksman Badge.The American Defense Service Medal,World War II Victory Medal,Europian African Middle Eastern Campaign medal with Arrowhead and Four Combat Stars,Good Conduct Medal,and was awarded a Purple Heart Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster as a result of injuries recieved in combat,he was shot in the head,the bullet just grazed his head,but it was enough to knock him uncontious.His platoon thought he was dead so they stuck his rifle in the ground and put his helmet on top.He woke up alone,but knew where his platoon was going,and he caught up.He earned the title "Lucky Hughes"when a mortar round shattered his rifle,but did not explode.After that everybody wanted to be next to,or near him.That is just a couple of the stories my Grandfather lived.
