USS Arizona BB-39 on Battleship Row, Pearl Harbour. A lovely painting showing USS Arizona BB-39 on battleship row, Pearl Harbour a few days before the 7th December 1941 attack which saw her destroyed.
Admiral Arthur W. Radford, USN, Commander in Chief, Pacific, and CinC, Pacific Fleet Leads the procession during memorial services on board the wreck of USS Arizona (BB-39), 7 December 1950, on the 9th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, National Archives Collection.
Artist Tom Freeman's vision of the USS Ward firing on the Japanese midget submarine in the early morning hours of December 7, 1941. Reading the sad news of Ken Swedberg’s death in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, reminded me that the USS Ward’s crew was 70% naval reservists from the 47th Division in St. Paul. These men, plucked from civilian life whose training consisted mostly of days at the Minnesota Boat club, Great Lakes summer cruises, and boat parades*, were stationed far from home on a ship that was considered over-age in 1934. I try to imagine myself in the same situation the captain and crew encountered in the very early morning of December 7, 1941. In one of the great legends of Pearl Harbor history, the captain and crew performed magnificently; a portent of the valor, bravery, and determination to come. For more information on the Ward and the sinking of the Japanese midget submarine, please consider books available at the PHP bookstore. *The source for the information on the Ward’s crew, from John Craddock’s “First Shot: the Untold Story of the Japanese Minisubs that Attacked Pearl Harbor.”
