Valley Forge National Historic Park : Twice a month I volunteer at Valley Forge National Historic Park as a historic interpreter. Basically, that amounts to me dressing up in a Colonial outfit and telling people about the history surrounding the encampment that took place there in 1777-1778. It's a lot of fun but some days it is rather slow while on others we seems to have a steady stream of visitors. I do enjoy bringing my camera with me and taking pictures during the quieter times.

Cades Cove, TN on 11/17 and 19/09 : This is a gallery of the sights Judy and I saw touring Cades Cove 23 miles outside of Gatlinburg, TN. This is one of Judy's favorite places. The first cabin was built in 1820, but I am certain life in the cove predated that by many years. After the Federal Government bought the land for a park, and the original settlers could no longer hunt as they did, they left the land.

The place was alive with deer and wild turkey and combining those pictures with these in the gallery would have diluted the land, trees, mountains, sky, water, etc. too much. The other attractions will be included in another gallery. Only the park rangers herd of horses have been included in this one and, of yes, the Blue Bird of Happiness.

Cades Cove: My Kind of Deer Huntin' 11/09 : During the several times Judy and I went through Cades Cove this '09 trip, I was looking for bear. All the beautiful scenery made up for not seeing them - probably alreading in hibernation. The deer were plentiful and a delightful lens filler. I had to do it the hard way. No crosshair. A few times I walked out into the middle of a large field at the top of a hill, pulled the hood of my Winthrop jacket around my head, and just waited. They came to me, all buy the old and wily bucks. Hope you enjoy this kind of hunting, as well as I. I'll bet mounting the head this way is easier and, of course, less expensive.

Roaring Fork Bypass, TN - My Bears June, '08 : My wife and her friend, Brenda, had been up on the bypass on Roaring Fork, part of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park earlier in the day, and they had seen what they were certain, a male bear feeding. The day before we had come upon a bear feeding on a deer in Cades Cove, but I thought it was too gruesome to shoot. Judy and I decided to try the Bypass one more time late in the afternoon. We came upon a mother bear and two cubs. Mesmerized, I suddenly realized I was right in the dense woods with the bears. I was too concentrated on camera settings and trying to keep up with their movement. It was late in the afternoon and dark, very dark in the shadows of the canopy of the woods. I had finally worked the ISO up to 3200 and still barely had the shutterspeed to cope with the bear's movement.
