Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive (Visitor Center to Mather Overlook) Sept 2012 : These photos were taken along Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive. We drove up to Mather overlook in the afternoon of Sept 11, 2012. We drove all the way to the top on Sept. 12, be sure to look at those pix as well. The road is paved, but narrow and winding. It gains over 4000 feet in 12 miles, its very steep. When you arrive at the end of the road you will be parked at a height of over 10,000 feet. Look at the rest of the road here: http://californiahiker.smugmug.com/Travel/2012/

Tetons : Magestic mountain views

"There can be nothing in the world more beautiful than the Yosemite, the groves of the giant sequoias and redwoods, the Canyon of the Colorado, the Canyon of the Yellowstone, the Three Tetons; and our people should see to it that they are preserved for their children and their children's children forever, with their majestic beauty all unmarred." -Theodore Roosevelt

Devil's Postpile National Monument 06/2012 : Devil's Postpile National Monument on opening day 6/29/2012.
 From "The Post", DPNM's newsletter:
On November 30, 2011, an unusual windstorm lasting almost 12 hours with winds between 100 -180 mph blasted large areas of the Reds MeadowValley, Devils Postpile National Monument, and the forests of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin. As the National Park Service, National Forest Service and our partners are earnestly working to clear trails that affected one quarter to one half of the trail systems, many important questions will emerge. Both agencies will continue to work together to find answers while continuing to provide all of our visitors with an enjoyable experience in the Reds Meadow Valley.
This year also marks the twentieth anniversary of the Rainbow Fire, a fire that burned 8,765 acres in 1992. It changed the valley as many knew it. As we all marvel together at the power of the natural forces that shaped the beauty of Middle Fork of the San Joaquin river valley, we can gain a deeper understanding of the role we all play in shaping the future. With your help, we all contribute to the appreciation and stewardship of this special place for ours and future generations of visitors and all living creatures that thrive in this river valley. On behalf of Devils Postpile National Monument and the Inyo National Forest, enjoy your visit! Click here for full newsletter:
