Ranger III Portfolio : The National Park Service vessel, Ranger III, is the lifeline for Isle Royale National Park. It is the highway system, the food and diesel fuel transporter, and the most luxurious surface transport to and from the park.

At 165 feet long, it is the largest piece of movable equipment in the National Park System.

The Ranger celebrated its 50th year in 2008. Here are a variety of views of the Ranger III in action. Some are straight photos; some have been edited to mimic a colored pencil drawing.

Mountain Goats (Canadian Rockies) : ..one of my most favorite photo memories...i came upon these guys in Jasper (Alberta Canada above Banff) and chased them over hills for more than an hour...they always stayed just out of camera range...finally the older fella decided to pull up and graze...he was aware of my presence but finally comfortable with me...perhaps it was the peanut butter sandwitch that i tossed his way (don't tell the park rangers)...it was a gas to watch them frollick..and man, can they handle some tough terrain--they wore me out..
