Abandoned in California: Llano del Rio Socialist Camp : Llano Del Rio, which was organized under the Llano Del Rio Company was a corporate-run socialist Utopian society initiated by Job Harriman, following his narrow defeat in a runoff election for the mayorship of Los Angeles. He believed that the success of socialism depended not only on politics, but also on the realization of socialist principles.
Although Llano filed for bankruptcy during 1918, from the time of its official formation in 1914 until 1917 the colony experienced extreme economic and political growth. By 1917, the population was over nine hundred members. In just over three years, the colonists of Llano were able to form a school system, create high producing farms, start numerous clubs and sports teams, and build many industries.
During 1918, the colony was abandoned. Llano Del Rio turned out to be too far from other settlements to develop a sustaining economy, and the water supply from Big Rock Creek proved to be unreliable. Some of the settlers (60 families) relocated to form New Llano in Louisiana.
The ruins that have been abandoned for decades are located in what is now Llano, California, in the Antelope Valley and along Highway 138 near 165th Street.

Essay: Salvation Mountain : Even as a non religious person, you can feel the exceptional free spirited aura that makes this place and California so special.

Salvation Mountain
Salvation Mountain is located in the lower desert of Southern California in Imperial County just east of the Salton Sea. Salvation Mountain is Leonard Knight's tribute to God and his gift to the world with its simple yet powerful message: "God Is Love." Leonard's passion has created this brilliant "outsider art " masterpiece resplendent with not only biblical and religious scripture such as the Lord's Prayer, John 3:16, and the Sinner's Prayer, but also including flowers, trees, waterfalls, suns, bluebirds, and many other fascinating and colorful objects. Its 50 foot height and 150 foot breadth is made totally of local adobe clay and donated paint and is truly unique in the United States and probably the world. From its Sea of Galilee at the bottom, to the big red heart in the middle, to the cross at the very top, the reoccurring theme of "Love" is everywhere at Salvation Mountain.

Leonard Knight
Leonard was born on November 1, 1931 just outside of Burlington, Vermont. After serving in the army in Korea, he spent a number of years traveling the country, eventually stopping in Nebraska for five years. During this period Knight developed a fascination with hot air balloons and began constructing one from colorful remnant material discarded by a balloon manufacturer. Although the balloon never flew, it now has a permanent home in the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore.

In 1967 Leonard was visiting his sister Irene in San Diego. She was always talking about the Lord and it sort of bothered Leonard. One morning to escape her sermonizing, Leonard reportedly went out of the house to sit in his van. To this day he really doesn't know why, but he started repeating the Sinner Prayer - "Jesus, I'm a sinner, please come upon my body and into my heart." It was on that that he at age 35 accepted Jesus into his heart.
Back in Vermont, his enthusiasm for the Lord, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost was mostly misunderstood. He went from church to church to share his new-found knowledge and always met resistance among the church leaders. Leonard's idea was simple like it says in the Bible: accept Jesus into your heart, repent your sins, and be saved. The church leaders said it wasn't that simple - that there was more to it than that. No one would listen to him. He couldn't make anyone understand how simple he thought it all was.

Years later, in 1984, he settled permanently near Niland, California, 190 southeast of Los Angeles, and began creating Salvation Mountain. The Mountain is about as tall as a three story building and as wide as a football field. Colorful decorations and religious texts cover Salvation Mountain. Most prominent is the statement “God is Love.”

Salvation Mountain is modeled with adobe clay. Most of the clay and paint Knight uses are donated to him. When he first started working on the Mountain, Knight used concrete and stretched it with sand, but the entire artwork collapsed, so he set to remaking it with solid clay. Knight uses window putty to shape decorative elements such as flowers. The mountain is constantly changing, due both Knigth's ongoing work and to the elements, including the desert sun. Knight has decorated numerous other objects surrounding Salvation Mountain, including the truck in which he lived. Next to the Mountain, Knight started building a museum out of hay bales, used utility poles, and found objects such as tires.

Leonard Knight said about his passion and his work: “I painted the mountain because I love God and I love people.”

80-year-old Knigth no longer greets the pilgrims in person. His eyesight and his hearing are failing, his memory is no longer reliable – Knight reportedly resides at a convalescent home outside San Diego now and he will not be returning to the spot where he once lived to spread the simple message: "God Is Love" – not without the help of his friends.

Since Knight has gone, the Mountain already shows signs of aging with cracked and fading paint. Friends and supporters now are challenged to rescue the extraordinary landmark.
