Senhora da Agonia Festivals 2009 : It is considered the festival of the portuguese festivals. The cult of Our Lady of Agony goes back to the 18th century, the first written reference to this event date of 1744. Its essential feature of the devotion of the people of the sea, which give back the gifts received during storms or shipwrecks. Hence, the main litter was traditionally carried by fishermen and only starting at 1968 as a fluvial procession, with the image of the saint, at the local river Lima. The number of visitors has increased significantly in recent years. Given this phenomenon, the festival promoters have sought to promote it by including an ethnographic, depicting the different municipalities of the district, and a costume party. In addition, fireworks, launched from the river banks, are a unique spectacle.
Another interesting curiosity are the amount of earrings and necklaces of gold that women, dressed in a traditional manner, carry with them, while parading. Often, around their neck they bring about 20 kilos of gold!!!
