Mt. Rainier : Mount Rainier, or Mount Tahoma, as it is traditionally called, is a large active stratovolcano (also known as a composite volcano). Located in Pierce County, Washington, 54 miles southeast of Seattle, it towers over the Cascade Range as the most prominent mountain in the contiguous United States at 14,411 feet. It is the highest mountain in Washington and the Cascade Range. On clear days it dominates the southeastern horizon in most of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area to such an extent that residents sometimes refer to it simply as "the Mountain." With 25 major glaciers and 35 square miles of permanent snowfields and glaciers, Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the lower 48 states. (Wikipedia)

Capitol Lake New Zealand Mud Snail Invasion : In October of 2009 Capitol Lake in Olympia WA was discovered to be infested with the New Zealand Mud Snail. About the size of a grain of rice, the snails could have been introduced into the lake from anything they can easily attach themselves to, such as boats, clothing, animal fur, shoes/boots, etc. Since they are asexual it only takes one being introduced into fresh water to begin an infestation. In December 2009, during a very cold period, the lake was drawn down in order to expose the snails to the below-freezing temperatures. It was estimated that 98% of the snails died during that freeze. On February 27, 2010, the lake was drained of freshwater and filled with saltwater for several days. The photos in this gallery were taken March 5, 2010 as the saltwater was drained and WA Department of Fish and Wildlife employees began collecting the snails to determine if the snails are dead or alive. We drove by the lake on March 7, 2010, and it appeared to be filled with freshwater again. They say it might be a week before they know if the saltwater treatment worked.
