PORTUGAL/SPAIN: 14-23 May 1991 : This overland trip started from Portsmouth on 14th May, by way of an overnight ferry from Newhaven-Dieppe, thence to Paris in time to catch the 09:33 Sud Express from Paris Austerlitz to Lisbon/Porto. The few Spanish photos here are from just the one location: Miranda de Ebro depot. We'd got off the train at Miranda on the return trip, in order to spend a few hours photographing some Spanish trains, but as soon as our train left we discovered that a rail strike was in operation as of NOW, and no more trains would run into the early hours next day, so I managed to arrange a depot visit. The Portuguese part of the trip and onwards was as follows:-
16 May: (Vilar Formoso, Pampilhosa), Lisboa Sta Apolonia, Barreiro (Barreiro Depot & dump - 36 locos, Barreiro Works - 20 locos, Barreiro carriage sidings - 3 locos), Setubal, Pinhal Novo, Barreiro (overnight train to Vila Real de Sto Antonio Guadiana).
17 May: Vila Real de Sto Antonio Guadiana, Lagos, (Tunes), Barreiro, Praca do Quebedo, Barreiro A (Barreiro Depot & dump - 31 locos), Barreiro, Setubal.
18 May: Praca do Quebedo, Barreiro, Lisboa Sta Apolonia, Entroncamento (Entroncamento Works/Depot - 29 locos, Entroncamento station SP - 5 locos), Porto Campanhã, Porto Sao Bento, Porto Campanhã. Sadly, we weren't allowed to take photos at Entroncamento Depot/Works.
19 May: Porto Campanhã, Contumil (Contumil Depot & yard - 17 locos), Porto Campanhã, Trofa, Avenida de Franca (Boavista Depot), Porto Trindade.
20 May: Porto Campanhã, Tua, Mirandela (Mirandela Depot & yard - 4 locos), Tua, Regua (Regua yard - 11 steam locos), Livracao (LIvracao Depot - 1 loco), Marco de Canaveses, Porto Campanhã.
21 May: Porto Campanhã, (Vila Nova de Gaia SP & yard view - 7 locos), Pampilhosa, Coimbra B (Coimbra B Depot - 8 locos), Coimbra, Coimbra B, (Pampilhosa), (Fuentes del Onoro).
22 May: (Fuentes del Onoro, Medina del Campo), Miranda de Ebro (Miranda de Ebro Depot - 32 locos).
23 May: Miranda de Ebro, Barcelona Sants, (a few Barcelona Metro trips in order to visit Sagrada Familia), Cerbere (Cerbere SP - 13 locos), overnight to Paris Austerlitz.
24 May: Paris Nord, Amiens, Boulogne Ville, ferry Boulogne-Folkestone, and home via London.
Unfortunately, I don't appear to have taken any photos after Miranda de Ebro.

PORTUGAL: Narrow Gauge Coaches, Wagons & Track Machines 1990-92 : With the recent announcement that all remaining Portuguese metre-gauge lines would be closed at the end of 2011, this seems an apt time to upload this collection of photos. Taken during the course of three visits to Portugal in 1990, 1991 and 1992, here will be found all manner of rolling stock, including coaches, wagons & trucks, draizines, and a few oddities, and I now doubt any which have survived so far will ever turn a wheel again.

PORTUGAL: Broad Gauge Hauled Rolling Stock & Departmental Vehicles 1990-92 : I decided to start photographing railway coaches in Portugal in 1990, when it became apparent that there was a great variety of ancient stock, on both broad & metre gauge systems. Here is a collection showing a wide range of broad gauge rolling stock, old and new, including departmentals & track machines, etc, taken during the course of three visits to Portugal in 1990, 1991 & 1992.

PORTUGAL: Narrow Gauge Locomotives, Units & Railcars 1990-92 : A rather sad farewell tribute to the metre-gauge railways of Portugal, which were all due to be officially closed at the end of 2011, although no trains have run for a while. This section covers locomotives (steam and diesel), diesel multiple units, diesel and petrol railcars, and their trailers. A few line views have been included.

PORTUGAL: 26-31 August 1990 : On 23rd August, I head off to Dover with no plans other than to go abroad (with a wide range of free tickets for umpteen countries), starting with Belgium & Holland. From Amsterdam, on a whim, I get an overnight train to Paris, and head to Austerlitz to catch the 'Sud Express' to Porto. (*See the preceding collection for photos taken in Holland & France on 24/25th August). No photos until Porto, on the 26th, as it was either at night, or very misty. The Portuguese itinerary (unplanned) for the week:-
DAY 1 (26th): Vilar Formoso, Pampilhosa, Porto Campanhã, Livraçao (Livraçao Depot - 1 loco), Amarante, Livraçao, Porto Campanhã, Porto Sao Bento, Contumil (Contumil Depot & yard - 21 locos + 1 passing), Porto Campanhã (Campanhã Depot, Works & SP - 2 locos).

(*at Entoncamento depot/works, the complex manager shows me around, and gives me line drawing books of CP rolling stock & ferries, and a pamphlet with loco details, so I'm now a bit more informed, and take notice of coaching stock.)
DAY 6 (31st): Vila Real de Sto Antonio (where camera batteries expire), Lagos, Tunes, Barreiro, Lisboa Sta Apolonia, Entroncamento, Valencia de Alcantara.
Return on 1st/2nd September via Madrid, Hendaye, Paris, Bruxelles & Oostende, with no photos to show for the last three days.
