London Underground : Over the years, the trains and infrastructure of the London Underground have changed considerably. Its operators have a good appreciation of enthusiasts, and occasionally specials have been run. Here are a selection of images taken from over the years, to coincide with the latest centenary event in early 2013. I will be adding detailed captions over the next few days.

St Pancras yesterday and today : Few London terminii have changed as much as St Pancras. From a slow decay in the 70s and 80s, it has been transformed by the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (HS1) to become the stylish stepping stone for Europe via Eurostar. Here are a few brief snippets from both eras...

Incidentally, the shots of Rocket deserve a little explaination. In March 1980, the Post Office decided to commemorate the 150th anniversary of mail being carried by train between Liverpool and Manchester with the issue of five new 1st class stamps (priced at 12p each!!), all with a railway theme. A replica of Rocket lifted into position at the Cambridge St diesel stabling point, and as a press 'event', allowed to steam into the station on 3 March. The photocall was reported in several national newspapers. Elsewhere, Jimmy Carter was US President and mortgage rates were approx 15%!

Summer 2012 : Despite a very miserable start to the summer, some good opportunities ensued nevertheless. In a wet and dismal June, a royal 67 and Britannia on the Alton line, followed within days by 37s on the test train, and a hyper rare run of a class 60 on the Holybourne tanks. The welcome return of 50 027 to the MHR - a proper run is eagerly awaited. Another set of 67s for VSOE filming. Various shots of A stock, now rapidly disappearing from the LU system, and some Virgin Pendolinos at Lichfield TV. Next, some shots of diesel operation on the Dean Forect Railway, taken during a brief family trip away. Finally, before a work day in Manchester, a few minutes viewing the trams in the morning sunshine at St Peter's Square.

The Cornish Epilogue - a tribute to John Vaughan : On Thursday 21 June 2012, I was hugely honoured to be invited by John Vaughan, a railway photographer I have known and admired for many years, to join him on a private charter train in Cornwall, to celebrate the launch of his latest (and last book), Cornwall's Railways. I was lucky to have got to know John in the later 1970s through his RPPR railtours, and through his friendship, went with colleagues on many photographic trips. I'm happy to admit that I learned much of my skill with a camera from John, and I regard him as one of, if not the, finest railway photographers of recent times. In true Cornish fashion, the middle of Summer in the county was marked by torrential rain all day, but the hospitality of the Bodmin & Wenford Railway shone through the murk, and an absolutely fantastic time was had by everyone. These are a selection of the shots from the day. Thank you John - you were, and remain, a true inspiration!
