158s on the Cambrian Railways : The Cambrian Railways was one of Britain's smaller railway companies in the pre-grouping era. It made a modest living serving the small towns, rural communities and seaside resorts of Mid-Wales with a long single track mainline from a junction with the LNWR at Whitchurch in Shropshire, through to the coast at Aberystwyth and from Dovey Junction a line north, which hugged the shoreline of Cardigan Bay all the way to Pwllheli, in what is now Gwynedd. Its headquarters and locomotive works were in the Shropshire town of Oswestry, between Welshpool and Whitchurch. It also reached North East Wales most important centre, Wrexham, but only by a branchline off the mainline from Ellesmere. There were numerous other branches as well; to Llangynog, Llanfyllin, Kerry, Dinas Mawddwy and Dollgellau as well as the narrow gauge Vale of Rheidol and Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. At the grouping, and much against its wishes, the Cambrian found itself in the unwanted embrace of the GWR. Its traditional ally was the LNWR, but the authoriies deemed that allocating the Cambrian to the LMS group would have given the latter a monopoly on almost all rail services in North and Mid Wales, and so it went to the GWR.

Today all that is left of the standard gauge Cambrian is the connection from Shrewsbury to Welshpool (in reality a GW & LNWR joint line), the mainline from Welshpool to Aberystwyth and the coast line from Dovey Junction to Pwllheli. The remainder, including the erstwhile mainline from Welshpool to Whitchurch via Oswestry and the lengthy Mid Wales line from Moat Lane Junction (near Newtown) to Three Cocks Junction and Brecon were lost in the Beeching era, or even earlier. The two narrow gauge lines have both survived, and prospered; the Vale of Rheidol is privately owned through a charitable trust whilst the W&LLR is enthusiast owned and operated.

The Cambrian is a very photogenic railway, even today when all services are in the hands of refurbished Arriva Trains Wales class 158s.

Far-West Germany : Pictures from the triangle Cologne - Aachen - Düsseldorf in the far western part of Germany. There's quite a bit of traffic variety, in no small part due to the international trains running into Belgium and the Netherlands and a sizeable industrial base in the nearby Ruhr area.

Main Line - Saturday 25th October 2014 : A main line trip behind A4 60009 'Union of South Africa' on the 'Jubilee Requiem' from King's Cross to Newcastle and return to York. From York electric traction took the train back to King's Cross. This tour was run to commemorate 50 years since 60009 was the last BR owned A4 to visit King's Cross and 25 years since it was the first preserved A4 at King's Cross. Travelling on a railtour nowadays gives the tour participants very little opportunity for photographs, so just a few token shots from the day are here. Premier dining ensured we were well fed!
