Peters Type B Colombians : History of the Peters "Type B" Colombians

I am often asked about the "Type B" Colombia Boas that I work with from Jim Peters. This line of BCI has a long rich history dating back to their importation in 1974.

In the following I will do my best to outline the details of the history of this magnificent locality. I am a recent admirer of the "Type B" Colombians. I first became aware of them in 2005 and immediately fell in love and set about to have them in my collection.

I was struck immediately by the increased red pigment of these animals, brilliant laterals and aberrant patterns.

Magnificent beast for the eye but their history and provenance information put them at the top of my locality "Hit List". The original specimens were collected in 1974 from the Rio Magdalena Valley Colombia and origin of importation is reported to be Barranquilla Colombia.

Jim Peters has consistently been working, and producing this type since the early 70's into the F2 and F3 generations. In Keeping with Jims unassuming nature he labeled them, simply, “Type B” Colombians.

In this area the Andes begins to declines in elevation allowing inter-breeding between B c. constrictor and B c. imperator. It is from this area we find some very interesting boas e.g Peters “Type B” Colombians This line exhibits traits of both .ssp and look like a naturally occurring intergrade. Their color is reminiscent of what we love about Basin BCC and their body confirmation is a little different from imperator. Not quite the rectangle look of BCC but not quite the look of BCI. My observation of 1.1 in my care is that they have more the personality of BCC, in my opinion.

“Type B” Colombians are robust animals. My adult female is 2.5 meters and my male is 1.75 meters long. My scale counts on 1.1 are as follows: 88/91 mid-body scale rows: 248/250 ventral scales: and 59/60 subcaudal scales. This places the “Type B” in my possession within the range of constrictor. constrictor.

The breeder, Jim Peters, classifies his “Type B” Colombians as Boa constrictor. imperator and who am to argue with M. P. Neither do I think that scale counts are the exclusive indicator of .ssp in Boa constrictor from this range. In closing it is an honor to be the care provider for this locality. In our humble opinion these are among the best Colombian Boas in the industry with substantiated locality data .

Reptiles and Amphibians : Whenever I see a frog or snake, it is a special moment because I do not often come across these animals in the wild. Photographing them is even more of a challenge. They are often very shy and skittish. Frog species worldwide are declining, several reasons include habitat loss due to urbanization, and a fungus that is killing many frogs. In Ontario, there are only a handful of amphibians and reptile species that are native. It is said that abundance of frogs indicate a wetland area is in good shape. Likewise, a poor showing of frogs indicate the wetland is in serious trouble.
