GoliadwithJoshandJacob_031313 : Judy and I took the grandkids, Jacob(12) and Josh(8), to see the historical sites at Fannin and Goliad Texas, the Fannin Battlefield Memorial at Fannin, TX. and the Mission Epsiritu Santo , the Presidio La Bahia , and the Fannin burial memorial in Goliad, TX. There were four historic sites that supported this story of Fannin and his men, their capture and ultimate heartless slaughter. The first was the Fannin Coleto Creek Battlefield Memorial in Fannin, TX http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_bk_p4502_0089a.pdf . The second was the Mission Espirtu Santo in Goliad, TX http://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/espiritu/goliad.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_Nuestra_Se%C3%B1ora_del_Esp%C3%ADritu_Santo_de_Z%C3%BA%C3%B1iga. The third was the Presidio La Bahia in Goliad, TX http://www.presidiolabahia.org/today.htm . The fourth was the Fannin memorial, the place of reburial of Fannin and his men. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goliad,_Texas

All photos were taken with my Sony A77 body and my Carl Zeiss 24-70/2.8 lens. Most of the photos were taken in RAW format; however, quite a number were taken using the A77's in-camera, multi-shot HDR.

I have included 17 shots from my previous trip with Wayne Wendell and David Billingsley in order to give a more complete overview of these important historic. However, it might have diluted the highlight of the trip which was the companionship of my two grandsons.

Goliad and NewBrunsfil DaveandWayne on 022613 : Dave and I took a trip with Wayne Wendell to take photographs of the courthouses of Texas. This trip included Goliad and New Brunsfels. All photos were shot with the Sony A77 body and the Carl Zeiss 2.8 24-70mm lens with the exception of the Sandhill Cranes. They were shot with a Sony A99 body and a Sony 'G' series 70-400 lens. The majority of shot were taken using Sony A77's in-camera HDR, the others shot Raw using aperture priority exposures. In most cases the method is noted in the comments below the photo.

judesflowers-030113 : Two day study in light in our backyard. The sun was out and in most cases caused high contrast and bright lights. I used two approaches. One was to use a fill flash(high-speed sync. with high camera shutter speeds, i.e. 1/1600 sec.) in order to lighten the shadow, therefore decreasing the contrast and adjusting exposure/brightness accordingly. The second approach was to shoot using the Sony A77's capability to shoot in-camera HDR. Three shots are fired within less than a half second of -2 f-stop bias, 0, and +2 f-stop bias. Shadow exposures are set based on the +2 bias expose and the highlights are set using the -2 bias exposures. The in-camera processors processes the output of one HDR Jpeg from the 3-exposures.

Subjects in a bright, high-contrast, non-diffused light with light and/or highly reflective surfaces are particularly hard to deal with in photography. These make for good practice for shooting birds from the High Island blind this Spring on bright, sunny days. My backyard is oriented just like the situation at the blind.

Jacob and Josh Swim and Dive on 072612 : A new crack at taking better pictures of the two youngest grandsons swimming and diving. I used a circular polarizing lens and shot most of the shots a F2.8 so I could get shutter speeds up high enough to stop action. Wasn't possible before last November.
