Barcelona : To travel across Spain and finally to reach Barcelona is like drinking a respectable red wine and finishing up with a bottle of champagne. For Barcelona is a exhilarating city, replete with challenging aspects. It is not only the political capital of the north…but it is also the intellectual capital of the country. It is a world unique to itself, a unique metropolis bound more to the Mediterranean than to the mountains, more to France than to Africa. Iberia, Spanish Travels and Reflections James A. Ronda : According to legend, one day shortly after the year 1700, a nobleman was upended by a bull’s charge and lay pinned on the ground under his mount, helpless before the horns of the onrushing bull. Suddenly, one of the village poor, watching the spectacle, leaped into the ring and, using his flat-brimmed Andalusian hat as a lure, distracted the bull, leading him clear of the helpless nobleman. Then, to the astonishment and delight of the other onlookers, he continued to wave and manipulate his hat, teasing the bull, allowing him to rush past his body again and again. The intrepid stranger was Francisco Romero, a carpenter’s assistant, and he went on to introduce the muleta, lay down rules, and become the father of bullfighting. Mordecai Richler, Images of Spain

Madrid : It is known simply as Room XII and has no equal in other museums. Many travelers who schedule their trips so as to see the Prado come only to see this room. It contains twenty-six paintings by Velazquez, works so varied and magnificent that of themselves they comprise a museum. James A. Michener, Iberia

Toledo : Caught shimmering in the sun on that rocky ridge that rises over the Tagus, Toledo is, quite simply, one of the most splendid sights in Europe. Within the city gates, its steep and narrow streets, buildings in the Gothic, “Mudejar”, Renaissance, and Baroque style, is a distillation of Arab, Jewish, and Christian history. Toledo remains, I suppose, the essence of Spain, turbulent Spain, from the time of the Visigoths kings, through the Moorish conquest and the Inquisition, to the civil war itself, when the massive Alcazar, dominating the city, destroyed and rebuilt so many times, was the scene of a famous siege, one of the legends of the war. Mordecai Richler, Images of Spain
