Coit Tower Sunset - 10/23/2006 : Taken at Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco, California.

An evening ride down Lombard Street, with the intention of navigating the crooked part, ends on Telegraph Hill. Being my first visit, I was unaware of the views in store. Fortunately, I had a camera. HDR mania ensues.

Richmond District Sunrise - 10/19/2006 : Taken on my back deck in San Francisco, California.

Ever since I'd returned from Dallas, my schedule had been totally out of whack. I found myself getting up before dawn with no hope of going back to sleep, so on the 3rd or 4th day of this I decided to take pictures of the sunrise out on the back deck. With a pot of coffee brewing, I setup the laptop and the tripod, deciding to give Digital SLR Pro another shot at turning out some HDRs. It turned out to be unnecessary as it never bracketed more than three pictures at once and the camera can do that already, but it was nice to see the results of everything instantly.

I'm rather pleased with the results. 69 total shots, that makes 21 HDRs, 9 final images. I think I'm getting better at picking my photos before I take them. Sometimes I will take multiple variations on a shot and sort it all out in processing, but I can usually make the snap decision on how it should be done on the spot.

I feel like I'm getting to the point now where I can look at something with camera in hand and know how the shot is going to turn out before I even take it. As a result, I find I take less pictures, but more of them are ending up being worth using. I wouldn't have gotten to this point if I hadn't just gone nuts photographing anything and everything and seeing what the results are. The downside to these focused sessions is that I surprise myself less often. Maybe I'm heading in the wrong direction?

One other thing I learned about doing sunrise shots: you have about 30 minutes of really beautiful colored light before everything gets too bright and blue. You better have your shots planned out and your equipment setup or you're not going to bang out all the shots you wanted before the sun comes up and ruins everything. What a drag, working around nature!
