Sunsets and Sunrises : I am enthralled with light and especially with sunsets and sunrises. The photographs herein come from many different sites with radically different environmental conditions that influence enormously the quality and beauty of the sky. Regardless, it is clear that one of the great joys in life is to be quiet, watch, and photograph the magnificent show that nature puts on for us at either end of our days.

Auditorium Shores Sunset - 9/04/2008 : Taken on the Auditorium Shores in downtown Austin, Texas. My daily bike ride takes me through Auditorium Shores right around this time of the evening. Every time I pass through this area, I'm struck with how beautiful the scenery is and how I should photograph it. One evening I skipped the bike ride and hiked out there with a camera and tripod to do just that. The half an hour of light after the sun dips below the horizon can create some pretty interesting scenes. I learned a bit more about tone mapping HDRs in Photomatix from this set. The gamma value was required to get any kind of normalized exposure of the skyline. The default is like day light and the colors don't work at all. With a few extra knobs turned, I managed to coax out something worth looking at.
