Tennessee Landscapes : Tennessee has a wide variety of landscapes, from the Smokey Mountains in the east to the flood plain of the mighty Mississippi River in the west. Here I've tried to capture a small amount of that variety.

Rural Tennessee : Each day, awakening, are we asked to paint the sky blue? Need we coax the sun to rise or flowers to bloom? Need we teach birds to sing, or children to laugh, or lovers to kiss? No, though we think the world imperfect, it surrounds us each day with its perfections. We are asked only to appreciate them, and to show appreciation by living in peaceful harmony amidst them. The Creator does not ask that we create a perfect world; He asks that we celebrate it. ~Robert Brault,

Tennessee State Capitol : The Tennessee State Capitol, designed by William Strickland, is one of Nashville's best examples of Greek Revival architecture. It is modeled after Greek Ionic temples and the cornerstone was laid on July, 4, 1845. It took fourteen years to complete the structure which houses the Governor's office and the Tennessee legislature. Limestone for the building came from a quarry about 1 mile from the site. William Strickland died five years before completion of this Tennessee landmark, and his remains are entombed in its northwest wall. The Capitol Building sits atop a prominent hill in downtown Nashville. You can only imagine what the commanding 360 degree view must have been like before all the modern hotels and other state buildings were erected. There are several additional monuments on the hill I must go back to photograph at a later date, but I will be sure to do so. The sad thing was when I got there Monday morning to take these photographs I found someone had sprayed graffiti on the building over the weekend. If you look closely in the first photo you will see a cameraman and newswoman were on hand to do a local news report about the vandalism.

Centennial Park, Nashville, Tennessee : The Parthenon is the centerpiece of Centennial Park which has been in Nashville since the Centennial Exposition of 1897. The Parthenon was originally constructed of wood and plaster, but to make the structure (an exact replica of the original in Athens, Greece) a permanent building for the public to enjoy it was reconstructed from concrete from 1925-1931. The museum was closed on Monday when I took these photos, so I will need to go back one day to photograph the interior of this magnificent work of art. Just as in Athens, the main feature of the Naos is a 42 foot tall statue of Athena Parthenos gilt with over eight pounds of gold leaf.
