Harrison County: Marshall, Texas : Built: 1889 Style: Renaissance Revival Architect: J. Riely Gordon Materials: granite,stone and marble Unique Features: Memorial to Korean and Vietnam veterans Memorial to the Confederate soldiers from Harrison County Harrison County was organized in 1846 and named after Jonas Harrison, early settler and noted lawyer. This is one of the three most beautiful courthouses in the State of Texas. It now serves as a museum and no longer used as a courthouse. The present courthouse is just a modern building with no character and not worth the effort to find it. I have visited this courthouse on 4 different occasions and always found it closed (Sunday's) or after hours. I made a concerted effort to stop in Marshall on our trip back from Tennessee. The interior is as beautiful as the exterior. There is a stained glass ceiling that is visible from the 1st floor. Some of the rooms are furnished in period furniture. Colorful flowers fill our yard : Our back yard use to be filled with antique or found roses purchased from The Antique Rose Emporium in Independence, Texas. Their link is here http://www.antiqueroseemporium.com/ if you want to see their selection. These are the most care-free roses I've ever grown. They are generous bloomers. The roses share the yard with azaleas, razzleberry, red bud, saucer magnolia, mock orange, ixora, hydrangea, etc. There is usually something in bloom. The roses are gone now after 13 years of wear and tear in the backyard as are most of the plants that the home builder planted. The new fence construction was hard on all the plants and we are trying to pick up the pieces and starting over.
