Riverside stroll - 8/25/2007 : Taken on Riverside Drive in Austin, Texas.

So I had heard tell of some commotion occurring downtown one weekday evening. I got off work late enough (again) to pretty much miss it. I had my camera with me, so I just started taking random pictures on the way home.

The settings are absolutely cranked on the camera. ISO 3200, Shutter priority 1/45th. This was the only way anything was going to turn out without a tripod. They were still almost all underexposed. I kind of like the look you get from processing them in Photoshop. You can alter the data for the areas that actually exposed some detail, but the rest is lost in a sea of smeared color. Haven taken the time to properly expose all these shots for the multiple seconds they needed, I would have come out with superior shots. Still, it's nice to know you can still have something to show for taking pictures at night on the move.

LBJ Dam - 7/29/2007 : Taken at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park in Johnson City, Texas.

There's a small dam on the Pedernales River not too far out of the way from Austin to Enchanted Rock. Dams are usually fairly impressive structures worthy of photography, so it came as somewhat of a surprise that the item of interest displayed on the map was in fact not much more than a speed bump for water. By golly, if I'm going to go through the trouble of trapsing through the grass with camera and tripod, pictures will be taken. Well, here they are!

Enchanted Rock - 7/29/2007 : Taken at The Enchanted Rock State Natural Area in Fredericksburg, Texas.

Enchanted Rock is a gigantic pink granite pluton sticking out of the middle of nowhere in Central Texas. It's quite a hike up top, but it's well worth the trek. All my shots here are HDR. I had a serious white balance problem on these shots. Pink rock + late afternoon sun = seriously messed up color balance. I ended up doing the HDRs twice after the first batch came out all wonky. I'm becoming increasing unhappy with the auto white balance on my camera. Could be time to bust out a gray card before photo shoots or something.

Tom Miller Dam - 7/04/2007 : Taken at the Tom Miller Dam in Austin, Texas.

In early July, we received enough rain to qualify for a "100-year flood". Fortunately, the dam network run by the Lower Colorado River Authority held strong. It sure moved a lot of water, though!

I had never been out on Redbud Trail before, so I didn't know what to expect. As soon as I saw the tops of trees sticking out of the water, I knew I had hit paydirt. There was a pretty steady stream of people both walking and driving over the bridge to check things out. The park in the middle of the river was pretty much underwater except the parking lot and the LCRA security guy was really upset that people would even consider parking their cars anywhere near the bridge.

Mansfield Dam - 7/04/2007 : Taken at the Mansfield Dam in Travis County, Texas.

In early July, we received enough rain to qualify for a "100-year flood". Fortunately, the dam network run by the Lower Colorado River Authority held strong. It sure moved a lot of water, though!

I had the 4th of July off from work (which was nice as I was working 60-70hr weeks at the time). On this holy of off-days, I decided to drive around to all the local dams and see just how much water the news kept talking about. Holy crap, they were right! This was a long day of sitting in traffic and getting rained on, but it was totally worth it.

Longhorn Dam - 7/04/2007 : Taken at the Longhorn Dam in Travis County, Texas.

In early July, we received enough rain to qualify for a "100-year flood". Fortunately, the dam network run by the Lower Colorado River Authority held strong. It sure moved a lot of water, though!

I hit the Longhorn Dam last on the way back home in the afternoon. It's not terribly impressive in relation to the others, but the current was moving very swiftly here. The dam panels lift up, so the water goes through from below and there aren't any impressive jets of water. It was cool anyway. Neener.

This is total HDR madness. It was too bright and the shadows were too harsh for a single exposure not to have something blown out or masked in shadow.

Texas Landscapes : Ask a Texan, "Where are you from?" and he might reply, "Texas! What country are you from?" Texas is so big and diverse it's like a small country. The landscapes vary from mountains to desert to plains, rolling hills to oak savannah to piney woods and miles and miles of Gulf coast.
