2009 September 29 - Town of Ludlow : These images show the wreckage of the tiny town of Ludlow, California; its surviving café and gas station kept alive by the traffic streaming by on Route 40 a mile or so to the north. Ludlow sits out in the middle of the Mojave and was once an important rail head before the advent of the modern highway systems. Just behind Ludlow lies the principal Santa Fe main line where long freight trains still make their lugubrious way down out of the high deserts of Arizona and New Mexico into the vast, lush California valleys below Barstow and Victorville.

2009 October - 1020 January Adrian, Texas : Here is the midpoint of old Route 66 which sits in the panhandle of Texas. The Café there serves homemade pies and their own Route 66 Root Beer in handsome amber glass bottles.

2009 July 19 - 2010 January 13 Cueavo - A New Mexico Cattle Town : Along old Route 66, forty-eight miles west of Tucumcari, New Mexico, sits a collection of long deserted buildings. The abandoned mining town of Cueavo runs back into the mountains, scattered across red clay, sage brush, cactus, and old Juniper trees. Cueavo is a work in progress - a decaying relic of the past that still holds on to the present. Among its crumbling buildings, long dry wells, and the ruins of work shed, you can find an abandoned truck, am old church with fresh flowers in its window, and modern street signs. I turned off Route 66 around 10.30am and wound back across the highway and up along a road of muddy red clay. The temperature was already over 100 degrees. I consider these "scouting" photographs, taken under a brilliant blue sky in hot desert temperatures -- I plan to revisit Cueavo sometime in the late fall when the temperatures are moderate and I can spend a long afternoon exploring the relics of this interesting town (and perhaps learning something about its history from some of the local residents.)

2010 January 13 - Yucca California : Toward the eastern end of the Mojave Desert is the nearly deserted little town of Yucca. There is an old Army proving ground and airfield not far inland. Yucca itself appears to be mostly the ruins of old buildings, the skeletons of rusted cars and trucks, and a large geodesic dome that apparently serves as the infrastructure for a liquor store. Other than the old dome, as in the case of Ozymandias, only the desert sands surround the wreckage of Yucca.
