India - Veranasi : This is the place in India that I most wanted to see and experience! It is a holy city, also called Benares , on the Ganges - a city that plays a major role in Hinduism. It is a place of pilgrimage and above all a place where all Hindus would like to die or at least have their ashes placed upon death. We attended the Festival of Lights following a hairy rickshaw ride through throngs of people and cows. We watched the incredible cremation rituals on the Ghats from a close distance (from boats on the river). The attendees are captured where possible. We were up at dawn and watched the sun rise over the Ganges and this City of LIght. We watched the reverence of the bathers. We saw the continuation of the cremation rituals into the daytime. It is truly a marvelous place and one that we will never forget.
