Robert Dziekanski rally : November 24th, 2007 - A rally was held on the steps at the back of the VAG to call for action in the death of Robert Dziekanski. He was tasered at YVR and died. I was only at the rally for an hour or so, but it was peaceful while I was there. (And remained so after I left, I hear.)

5th evening - Vancouver at dusk : At the conclusion of our last day in Vancouver (after too briefly resting my feet from the day's sightseeing), I decided to try to catch some shots near our hotel as the evening descended. After wandering amid the high-rise buildings I ended up at the Granville Avenue theater district, a block-long pedestrian-oriented stretch of wide sidewalks and a narrow, one-way street. Lots of color, but tough to shoot without a tripod.

4th day - In and Around Vancouver : After an early AM sojourn to the nearest Starbucks, and a little exploring of the neighborhood around our hotel (the Georgian Court, across from the B.C. Place Stadium) we drove around greater Vancouver a bit. We wandered around the shore of English Bay and out to the west end of the U of BC to look down at the log rafts and across the Gulf of Georgia to Vancouver Island beyond. Then we explored the mansions of what I guess is the Quilchena and Shaunessy districts. After a bit more wandering and gawking, we had dinner that evening at Zefferreli's on Robson Street; I highly recommend it (another suggestion from our hotel concierge).

2nd evng - dinner at Cloud 9 Restaurant : Although the Vancouver Lookout at the Harbour Center is more prominent on the downtown skyline, a better view is to be had - along with a memorable dinner - at the Cloud 9 Restaurant on the 42nd floor of the Empire Landmark Hotel (formerly the Sheraton Landmark). These pictures attest to the indescribably beautiful view from that vantage point, and I'd rate our dinner as one of the best I've eaten (caution: it's fairly expensive). This spot is perhaps the most under-recognized attraction in a city with a wealth of great things to see and do.

2nd day - Granville Island : Here's a fun place to visit. It's another older industrial area that's been gentrified and turned into a tourist attraction, but it's a destination for locals as well. The old industrial buildings have largely been repopulated with artists and artisans, whose studios and shops are open to the public (there are also a few remaining working businesses that aren't). There's also a working boatyard and, by far the most popular attraction, a huge Public Market where all sorts of commodities - particularly fresh foods - are sold. Browsing the aisles as merchants are busy negotiating prices with buyers, in a cluster of interconnected buildings that seems to go on forever, you might spend the entire day in the Public Market alone. I think it would take at least a week to really see everything at Granville Island.
