> Downtown; Grand Marais, Minnesota

Grand Marais is full of tourists from June through October. But on a cold December afternoon in the middle of the week, downtown is a pretty quiet place.

 > Schooner and Storm Clouds, North House Folk School; Grand Marais, Minnesota

The North House Folk School teaches just about any traditional craft and trade you might think of. In summer and fall, they offer rides on their schooner, too. But a December boat ride just before a snowstorm wasn't an option!

A snowstorm is coming and the sun grows dim through the thickening clouds. For a little while, the light takes on a silvery tone that I love.

 > Tree in Ice, Cascade River State Park; Lutsen, Minnesota

Like many North Shore rivers, ice often chokes the Cascade. Then water backs up and freezes. That's how this little tree ended up surrounded by ice. The golden-amber color in the water and ice comes from tannins.

The Cascade River drops over many waterfalls on its way to Lake Superior. This is the last, and the most photographed, of the falls. Cold winter weather changed it considerably! The golden-amber color in the water and ice comes from tannins.
