Fishermen were living in Silver Bay by the early 1900's. The village came into existence in 1952. It was platted by Reserve Mining Company to serve the taconite processing plant and harbor the company started building in 1951. The steam plume is from the taconite plant.

Bright, colorful, and complete with a giant walleye head, the Beaver House is a Grand Marais landmark. It's worth a stop inside, even if you don't fish! Oh, the walleye's tail sticks up above the roof during the warm seasons. It's taken down come winter.

Tofte Park is a delightful little stretch of undeveloped shoreline in the old fishing village of Tofte.
