Fishermen were living in Silver Bay by the early 1900's. The village came into existence in 1952. It was platted by Reserve Mining Company to serve the taconite processing plant and harbor the company started building in 1951. The steam plume is from the taconite plant.

The ridges above Lake Superior in Cook County are known as the Sawtooth Mountains. Mountain is a misnomer, but there are some wonderful views.

Gooseberry Falls State Park may be the most visited park on the North Shore. The Gooseberry River drops over four falls before reaching Lake Superior. The falls may look frozen, but there's water flowing beneath all that ice.
