> Icy Falls, Cascade River, Cascade River State Park; Lutsen, Minnesota

The Cascade River drops over many waterfalls on its way to Lake Superior. This is the last, and the most photographed, of the falls. Cold winter weather changed it considerably! The golden-amber color in the water and ice comes from tannins.

Blue Northers are fierce northwest winds that can sometimes follow a winter storm. They drive bitter cold air south under bright blue skies, hence their name. On this morning, the northwest wind was gusting to over fifty miles per hour. That made walking very difficult, indeed!

Gooseberry Falls State Park may be the most visited park on the North Shore. The Gooseberry River drops over four falls before reaching Lake Superior. The falls may look frozen, but there's water flowing beneath all that ice.
