A snowstorm is coming and the sun grows dim through the thickening clouds. For a little while, the light takes on a silvery tone that I love.

Like many North Shore rivers, ice often chokes the Cascade. Then water backs up and freezes. That's how this little tree ended up surrounded by ice. The golden-amber color in the water and ice comes from tannins.

Blue Northers are fierce northwest winds that can sometimes follow a winter storm. They drive bitter cold air south under bright blue skies, hence their name. On this morning, the northwest wind was gusting to over fifty miles per hour. That made walking very difficult, indeed!
