Valley Floor : These pictures were shot over three days in Yosemite. A number of the pictures are HDR done with Photomatix Pro (with Local Contrast added with LIghtzone aferwards). As mentioned before, I shot a lot of bracketed exposures (2/3 over and under) with the thought of using the best exposure afterwards. I had no plans for any HDR treatments. Because of the coastal (and closer) forest fires, there was a lot of haze obscuring much detail. (It was only on the day I was leaving that things cleared up somewhat.) Working with the pictures afterwards I found that using Photomatix Pro really helped the clarity. Even though the original pictures weren't optimized for HDR (5 shots would have been better than 3, a bigger f-stop difference would have helped, and a constant aperture for each burst wasn't used), I'm more that satisfied with the results.

Ahwahnee : I didn't stay at the Ahwahnee but did have lunch there one day. The Ahwahnee is very impressive, and lunch was great.

Glacier Point : The view from Glacier Point was really obscured by haze from the coastal (and nearer) forest fires. For most pictures I had my cameras set to bracket the exposure by 2/3 over and under. I had NO plans to do any HDR work. If I had, I would have used larger brackets and used aperture priority to keep the f-stops constant. To my surprise though, using Photomatix Pro really helped many of the shots. By no means are these meant to be wonderful examples of HDR pictures, but I'm VERY happy with the results. For several pictures I've included a non-HDR photo so you can see the difference. I also used Lightzone (Local Contrast only) on most (if not all) pictures.

Mirror Lake : After the hike to Vernal Falls bridge and back I hustled over to Mirror Lake. The stream flowing out of Mirror Lake was tranquil and all that, but as a whole Mirror Lake didn't do much for me. It was late in the day, there was still forest fire haze to contend with, and Mirror Lake fills in more every year. I wonder if they can dredge it? (Just kidding, where's your sense of humor?)

Vernal Falls : I hiked as far as the bridge, about a mile from the trailhead start at Happy Isles. The elevation gain was about 300 feet. From my standpoint it sucked that you would gain some elevation on the trail and shortly thereafter it was down hill so you had to regain elevation time and again. I decided that continuing on the Mist Trail to the top of Vernal Falls (or even further to Nevada Falls) wasn't in the cards this visit.

Hetch Hetchy : Hetch Hetchy is in Yosemite National Park. I took time for a short visit before continuing on to Yosemite. Haze from coastal fires really obscured the views.
