Jordan & Egypt: People and Portraits : These photos were taken over my four-month study abroad semester in Jordan which ran from February to May 2007. These pictures feature people I met on the program and were taken in various locations in Jordan and Egypt.

Technical Information:
Cameras: Canon 30D and a friend's Sony hand-held.
Lenses: EF 85mm f/1.8 and my favorite the EF 17-40mm f/4L, the latter of which broke on the flight home of all places, but worked amazingly well in all types of conditions during the semester.
Post-Processing: RAW from DPP 3.0, further editing in CS3 (my first time using the program) and PSP X.

Canon Spedlight 580EX-II, Serial Number 0263xx : The Following images have been taken of Canon's recent release (May, 2007) of their Speedlite Flash. I took a few test shots, with a 1dmk2N and am pleased with the perfect exposures, and the heavy-duty feel for the unit itself. I would swear that it is literally heavier than the 580EX version; the documentation says both units have equal weight. Being too curious, and having a candy scale, when weighing both units with Lithium AA cells installed, the 580EX-II is about 16.5oz and the 580EX is 15oz, not a big difference but clearly +1.5oz. In the views shown and displayed on this link, there is rubberization on all surfaces that would harbour water or dust intrusion. The Flash-shoe has been seriously re-worked with a heavy steel-angle-iron fitting. No more flimsey plastic fittings. The mechanism to lock the flash securely onto the camera flash show is clearly robust and locking, requiring an affirmative push-putton before one can slide the locking mechinism to the left; no more rotery-wheels... There is an image showing the infrared lenses, with the thyristor inserted for more accurate light measurement. The rotation of the flash head in all directions are secure and water-tight. As to operation, the unit is totally silient when charging the flash-energy. No more whining of the circuts, total quiet other than the "pop" heard for the flash itself. Then the a lens is zoomed, one can hear a quiet gear-motor moving the flash tube into the appropriate focul point for maximum delivery of the light beam, sychronized with the focul length of the lens/imager combination. The macro images were taken with Sony's DSC-T100 in its super-macro mode to show minute details of the body of the flash unit. Sorry for the dust...

Canon 14mm f2.8L Ultra Wide Angle Rectilinear lens SN 166781 (mounted onto Canon 1Dmk2N) : This ultra-wide-angle lens has the shortest focal length in the L-series. Element 2 is an aspherical lens to correct distortion. Other aberrations such as astigmatism are also corrected, resulting in ideal image quality. The lens has a fixed, petal-type hood and a gelatin filter holder at the rear.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is 'Rectilinear,' What is a 'Fisheye'? 'Rectilinear' and 'Fisheye' are two different optical designs for wide angle lenses, resulting in very different looks. All modern ARRI/Zeiss wide angle lenses, including the Ultra Prime 8R, are of rectilinear design. When a lens projects a three-dimensional scene onto a two-dimensional piece of film, not all geometric properties of the original scene can be maintained. This is essentially the same problem as mapping the shape of the continents of our three-dimensional globe onto a two-dimensional map. The choices of lens design, focal length and distance to the subject determine the character of this mapping, which is commonly referred to as perspective, one of the cinematographer's most important tools. For wide angle lenses, the lens designer must make a choice between a rectilinear or a fisheye lens design, with different consequences for perspective. The most obvious differences can be seen by how straight lines and objects at the edge of the frame appear.
