"VICKSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK" 2010
Vicksburg, MS
I wish I could have taken more pictures, but we were on a tour bus that stopped intermittently...........so many wonderful photo ops, so little time! There were some really great exhibits (over 1,340 monuments and a restored Union gunboat). Oh, well - maybe next time. Vicksburg contributed greatly to American history in the role she played in the Civil War. It was the scene of a 47 day siege by Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant who captured Vicksburg and marked a turning point in the war. There is a lot of monuments, markers and memorials which relate to this period at the Vicksburg National Military Park. The park commemorates the campaign, siege, & defense of Vicksburg. Today, it is still a major river port and serves as a commercial and manufacturing center for the surrounding cotton, timber, and livestock areas. Support our troops and their families!Photos taken with my Canon Powershot digital camera.
