This 1803 treaty with France extended the western U.S. boundary from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. Part or all of 15 states were later formed from this region. This land was purchased from France for about $15 million dollars. Other personal photos are in the St. Charles gallery. Rodney > The Lewis and Clark Discovery Expedition begins its journey up the Missouri exactly 200 years after the first expedition.  In 1978 Congress established the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail as part of the National Trails System.  This trail is 3,700 miles long tracing the route of the explorers.  Today you can follow this trail by boat , car, or motorcycle.  Along the way are historical markers, exhibits, visitor centers, and living history programs. Rodney > The "Corps of Discovery" numbered 44 men of diverse backgrounds.  Most were U.S. Army enlisted men.  Others were backwoodsmen.  A few were French boatmen who were hired to pilot the keelboat up the Missouri and who also knew how to handle the smaller boats called pirogues.

Rodney > The village of St Charles, Missouri were very friendly to Captian Clark and his crew when they arrived on May 16, 1804.  Captain Lewis joined the party in St. Charles on May 20, 1804 and then they proceeded up the river on May 21, 1804.
Rodney > Full scale working replicas of the Lewis & Clark boats. For the first 600 miles of their trip, they had to battle the swift and dangerous currents fo the Missouri River. Rodney > Lewis and Clark days St. Charles Missouri exactly 200 years from when began traveling together up the Missouri in May of 1804.  St. Charles, Missouri was first settled 1769 by Louis Blanchette and his party of French-Canadians.  St Charles, established as a trading post, was known as "Les Petites Cotes" until it got its present name in 1791.  Many fur trappers would head up the river from St. Charles for 1 to 3 years.  A trapper would be paid $200 dollars a year.
