Formal Invite for "Black History Month - Buffalo Soldiers, 1866 - 1902 (Authentic Uniforms)"

I would like to formally invite you to speak in my first grade classroom on February 25, 2010. We will be honored with your presence and have invited parents and the local newspaper in hopes of furthering your cause to not forget some of our most important members of the United States Amry during a most crucial period in our American history. The job of the "Buffalo Soldiers" was very important but also very dangerous. They are true heroes but so little is known about them, and by just a few.

At Zaharis Elementary, Mesa, we embrace learning head-on with purposefully chosen literature and critical conversations, about topics such as these brave soliders, who not only fought and died for our country, but also were discriminated against along the way. My first graders know what is not right about this even at the tender age of 6.

We look forward for your presentation, which will provide an amazingly realistic and visual experience for our inquiry into civil rights and I thank you for your tireless and selfless journey to educate others on this important topic. Hopefully, with your work, these BRAVE MEN, and at least one BRAVE WOMAN - Cathy Williams" that I know of, will be a little "less" forgotten and a lot more remembered.

Ms. Gwen J. Struble, 1st grade teacher at Zaharis Elementary

SPECIAL NOTE:
Dear Pvt. Michelle London-Marable - Thanks for bringing the Buffalo Soldiers into our school and our hearts!!!
Your new friend, Mike Oliver, Zaharis Principal
