Wildlife photographed while hiking or backpacking.
Life and death in the Columbia Gorge...
We logged a couple of nice hikes yesterday, squeezing as much as we could out of a gorgeous spring day. At the tail end of our second hike of the day, we spotted a lone coyote loping among the profusely flowered lower slopes of Rowena Point. It alternately appeared and then disappeared behind massive clumps of balsam root and lupine. As we watched, it suddenly lunged/leapt and nearly did a full cartwheel as it spotted, grabbed, and quickly dispatched its prey, a most unlucky squirrel. Barely slowing down, it trotted off with dinner in mouth. It all happened so quickly and so unexpectedly that we were lucky to have any chance at all to capture any of it on camera. Call it the icing on the cake of a very nice day on the trail.
