BM-Railfan > A "PCC" class streetcar at Central Avenue Station in Milton. PCC's were once seen all over the metropolitan area working for the Boston Elevated Company, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), and in recent years the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Now they are only found on the Mattapan to Ashmont Line. This one has been repainted back to its orignal colors as it was delivered from the factory in 1945
BM-Railfan > Another view of a PCC Trolley at the Central Avenue Station in Milton
BM-Railfan > MBTA Engine number 1009 operating in "push-pull" mode is pushing a commuter train into North Station over a Charles River drawbridge. Signal Tower A in the background is one of the few surviving buildings with the words "Boston and Maine Railroad" carved into it. The Boston and Maine once dominated transportation north of Boston but it no longer operates passenger trains and its freight business is only a shadow of what it once was. Note the remant on one the Big Dig's temporary roads over the roof of Tower A.
BM-Railfan > South Station - Scanned from an undated slide taken from sometime in the 70's. An old Alco road switcher of New Haven RR heritage is switching a modern Canadian LRC train which AMTRAK tested on the Boston New York route but did not buy.
BM-Railfan > On 10/27/1973 the Steamtown Foundation ran a steam powered special passenger train to Montpelier, Vermont over the Boston and Maine Railroad. This the last time a large steam engine made a long trip out of Boston. The picture above is former Nickel Plate RR Engine number 759. The Berkshire type steam engine is shown adjacent to Bunker Hill Community College the night before the big trip. Scanned from an old slide. © 1973 Bill McCaffrey
BM-Railfan > North Station Commuter Rail - This is before the "Big Dig" and the construction of the TD Bank North Garden. An outbound commuter train awaits the afternoon rush hour.
BM-Railfan > A brakeman rides the top of a boxcar at the hump yard of the Boston and Maine RR. This photo was taken in the early seventies before safety rules were changed to prohibit employees riding the tops of cars
BM-Railfan > Commuter Rail trains share a bridge over the Mystic River with the MBTA Orange Line. The silver cars were built as self propelled rail diesel cars (also called Budd Cars). BY this time in their life they no longer run by themselves but are hauled by a Boston and Maine RR locomotive
