I was passing through and had to stop and check it out. I'm glad I had my camera with me. Although it's not very big, it has a few exhibits on the second floor - mostly about Mississippi, of course. I also picked up a free Mississippi Vacation Guide as a souvenir. Greenville, MS is approximately 134 miles (2 hours and 15 mins.) from the capitol city of Jackson, MS and approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes from Memphis, TN.
The Washington County Welcome Center was a project created by the City of Greenville .The steamboat replica River Road Queen was built for the Mississippi Pavilion on the New Orleans World´s Fair in 1984. The project was to resemble a nineteenth century steamboat. The city then proposed to use the exhibit as a tourist information center after the World’s Fair was over. The second floor houses a small display of river artifacts including the whistle of the steamer KATE ADAMS (#3217). The steamboat replica was taken apart and brought back to Greenville to serve as a tourist center in 1985. The replica now sits in eighteen inches of water and is visited by tourists across the country.
