Now for a little personal history.

I was born and raised in Southwest Detroit in the 1970s, and even though we're nearly the same age, I've never met Eminem or seen him on 8 Mile. My family moved from Detroit when I was nearly 16, abandoning my melting pot of friends who had become like family. As an adult, I've remained close to Detroit and live just 'Downriver'.

My Uncle was a strong influence on my interest in photography. From an early age I remember the incredibly technical looking cameras and lenses kept in my Grandmother's credenza - always off-limits to us. He would photograph everything from pigeons and telephone poles, to his own feet standing in different places, to family events and holidays, in color, B&W, and slide. I quickly became intrigued by the capture of time, mood, and emotion; memories that you could touch, that couldn't be forgotten.

This is a photo of me from around 1975 taken by my Uncle.

My interest grew as I did and in my youth I began tinkering with point and shoot and 110 Film Format cameras until the day I bought my first Minolta 35mm SLR.

My first 'assignment' came from friends at work who asked me to photograph them at a local karate tournament simply because I had the equipment. Even though they no-showed, I got some great shots and became familiar with the local martial arts circuits. This began my continuing pursuit in the challenging field of event photography.

In the early 1990s, I met a beautiful, talented girl I would someday make my wife. After a short 5 year relationship, that day would finally come in May 1999. We have been together 15 years, happily married for 10, and have 2 boys.

The above photo from our wedding reception was also taken by my Uncle.
