DarienC > A Mukilteo Evening

In 1792 Capt. George Vancouver, who was commisioned by the British to survey the Pacific Northwest, landed at this point, now known as the town of Mukilteo. It was originally named 'Rose Point', due to all the wild roses that were growing here when they arrived in May.

The lighthouse itself was built in 1906. Today, it is just a small, fenced off park, with a little gift shop.

Avoiding other photographers and chain link fences are one of the challenges of getting a shot at this place. I used a 2 stop ND grad in this two exposure HDR shot.

Thanks go out to Wilson Tsoi for the inspiration on this.
DarienC > Geometric Violet

Sunrise over violet tulips in Mt. Vernon WA. I slept in my car the night before, and woke before sunrise to get into place. It was cold out, and there was frost on the tulips. It was pretty clouded over, but the sun broke free for about 60 seconds...long enough for me to get off a couple shots. I waited for an hour for the sun to come back, but it never did.

I remember being disappointed but looking back now, it was worth it. Funny how that works. At the time, you don't really think about it, but you're forming the memories that you will look back on later.....even if they only come 60 seconds at a time.

Best viewed large.

DarienC > Snoqualmie Falls, Spring 07.

Went up to Snoqualmie Falls. The weather was nice at my house, but as I drove up I-90 towards Snoqualmie, the weather completely changed and it started pouring. I almost turned around and headed back towards the west, as it was still clear in that direction, and the sunset was looking promising. I decided to just head up anyways in hope that I might get lucky. When I got there, it wasn't raining as bad as I though it would be, and I managed to get off a couple of shots. I had to put a microfiber cloth over my lens in between shots as the spray coming up off the falls was everywhere and made it really difficult to get a clear shot. As I waited, the sun broke free for a bit and lit up just the edge of the falls, along with the hotel that sits above them. I was hoping for a rainbow or something spectacular, but didn't get it. The closest I got was the light coming in and dancing on the spray a bit, lighting it up in places. It was a pretty nice display for a minute or two.
DarienC > I did this for the double page opening shot in a hardcover book that is being published by WHERE magazine, who puts out tourist publications, magazines and books for every major city in America. It will be on location at all upscale hotels in the Seattle-Tacoma area. They wanted something quite colorful, so I pushed saturation a tad further than I might have normally. They were looking for something more along the lines of this: darien.smugmug.com/gallery/1779501#90514054-O-LB

That shot is one of my first landscapes from a year ago, and I guess my style has changed a bit since then, and although I tried to reproduce it, something entirely different came out. They would have used original shot, but I took it with my D70 and it didn't have the resolution needed for publishing.

This shot is going to be the back page closer, although I've reworked it, as it was a bit sloppy (you can see USM halos and the sky is a bit too dark):

Sorry for so many details, but this is my first publication, so I am a bit excited.

A HUGE thanks goes out to Tomas Kaspar for the inspiration on this shot. I basically stole the compo from him. He has taught me more than he knows with his photography.

Do yourself a favor, and check out his incredible work: flickr.com/people/tomaskaspar/
